Hardware for measurement data acquisition
In order to turn physical parameters into usable data, the parameters must first be recorded where they are generated. Various sensors are used for this purpose, for example to record temperatures in the working area of a machine, pressures in containers or emitted sound and convert them into electrical signals. These analog signals are then sent to measurement data acquisition systems where they are transformed into digital values. Measuring amplifiers, also known as DAQ or DAS systems, are used for this purpose. Put simply, DAQ systems linearize, isolate and amplify the output signals from the sensors, thereby preparing them for digitization. Once the transformation from analog to digital signals has been carried out in the DAQ system, the data is sent to central software for further processing via various interfaces (LAN, WiFi, 5G, etc.).

What measurement data can be recorded and how exactly does it work?
In principle, all physical parameters can be recorded by sensors and converted into measurement data. The basis is always a sensor that is optimized for the respective application. For example, thermocouples or resistance thermometers are used to measure temperatures, while acceleration sensors detect shocks or vibrations. Current sensors can be used to measure direct and alternating current, while humidity sensors measure the humidity in rooms or in the working areas of machines. Speed sensors, torque sensors, pressure sensors and flow sensors are also used millions of times in a wide range of industries. Regardless of the measurement task, the process of recording and processing measurement data is always the same:
- Physical parameters are recorded by a sensor and converted into electrical signals.
- The electrical signals are forwarded to DAQ hardware, such as a data logger, where they are converted into digital values.
- The data is forwarded to DAQ software via appropriate interfaces, where it is stored, processed and archived centrally.
- If required, the data records are processed, visualized, analysed and made available via dashboards for further use by humans.
What can a DAQ system be used for?
DAQ data acquisition systems can be used for a wide range of applications. In production, for example, the recorded data is used to optimize manufacturing processes and increase process reliability. The continuous condition monitoring of production machines, systems and devices is also based on precisely recorded measurement data. Another possible application is predictive maintenance - a maintenance and servicing approach in which sensor technology is used to detect faults and defects in components at an early stage. This prevents expensive, unproductive machine downtimes and significantly reduces maintenance costs. Even in the field of automation, nothing works without a reliable data basis - just like in the field of building monitoring or the monitoring of spatially distributed systems.
Machine data acquisition in practice: how measurement data acquisition works on a machine
Production machines are ideally suited for optimizing the running processes through measurement data acquisition. Here too, the basis is sensors that are distributed at different points depending on requirements and objectives. Sensors that monitor the motor speed of the electric drive motors, temperature sensors on the tools used or sensors that record the fill levels of auxiliary materials, operating fluids and lubricants are common here. The sensors are connected via interfaces to data acquisition loggers such as the Delphin Loggito. The measured values can be recorded decentrally and forwarded to DAQ software via LAN, USB or WLAN, depending on the IT architecture. The software can be located in the cloud or in the company's data center. In the DAQ environment, the individual machine data is compiled fully automatically - providing a very detailed insight into the exact processes on the machine. The use of the data acquisition logger as an edge device is particularly interesting here - considering that one machine alone can "produce" several gigabytes of data per working day, it is essential to relieve the available bandwidth for data transmission, especially for extensive monitoring tasks. However, the collected data is still worthless at this stage - as it only represents a collection of values in a database. It is only through the additional use of special software that the machine data becomes "digital gold" - precisely when the software turns the endless chains of numbers into visualized graphics, key figures and diagrams.
