The commands are written as human-readable ASCII text and follow a hierarchical structure, typically based on English keywords. This allows different classes of devices—such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, or power supplies—to be controlled using similar commands.

Communication Layer and Transmission

SCPI defines only the logical command set, not the physical transmission layer. ASCII commands can be transmitted via various interfaces and bus systems, such as GPIB, RS-232, USB, Ethernet/LXI, or other communication channels. This ensures that SCPI remains flexible and can be used in both traditional laboratory setups and modern, network-based test systems.

Significance in Measurement Technology

In measurement technology, SCPI enables vendor-independent, script- and software-based remote control of measurement instruments. Users can create automated measurement routines, test sequences, or calibration procedures by sending SCPI commands to the devices from programming languages such as Python, C#, LabVIEW, or from test automation environments. For integration into complex measurement and test systems, SCPI thus provides a standardized and well-documented interface for configuration, data acquisition, and result retrieval.

In the Delphin environment, the standardized integration and automation of measurement tasks also play an important role, for example in connection with ProfiSignal and software-based measurement, analysis, and test bench applications. Even though Delphin solutions are not primarily described using SCPI, the term is well suited to applications in which measuring instruments are integrated and controlled in a structured manner and measurement data is processed centrally.

["post-7393","glossar","type-glossar","status-publish","hentry
["GET
