The CAN-Bus belongs to the Fieldbus systems and is a Serial, asynchronous and real-time capable communication system for reliable data transmission between electronic devices and control components. The CAN bus was originally developed for the Automotive industry, today, however, it is used in numerous areas of the Industrial, automation and building technology to the established communication standards.
Communication takes place via Short data packets with high Transmission security and integrated Error detection:. This makes the CAN bus particularly suitable for applications in which a Stable and fast data communication is required under demanding environmental conditions. The bus structure is linear and is connected at both ends with 120 ohm terminating resistors terminated to avoid signal reflections.
The maximum cable length depends on the transmission speed used. Typical values are, for example, approx. 40 m at 1 MBit/s or up to 500 m at 125 kBit/s. The number of possible participants depends on the driver modules used and the respective system architecture. With commercially available components, up to 128 participants realize.
Due to its high Interference immunity, Real-time capability and Robust communication the CAN bus has proven itself in networked control and automation solutions in particular. The CAN bus also plays an important role in products from Delphin Technology AG. In the Measurement and data acquisition systems of the ProfiMessage series it is used, for example, as Internal communication bus between CPU and I/O modules and to the Communication between master and slave devices is used. As a result, the CAN bus enables Reliable, modular and flexible system architecture for industrial Measuring, testing and automation tasks.
