More data and an increased need for testing

The automotive industry's demands on measurement and testing technology are currently changing very dynamically. The trend towards autonomous driving is placing even greater demands on the safety and reliability of systems.

More sensors, software and connectivity are making systems more prone to errors so they require additional testing at increased intensity and accuracy.

This requires more intensive, more precise and more extensive tests. Suppliers and OEMs often go beyond the VDA and IATF standards in their tests in order to avoid expensive recalls. In the automotive industry, the main focus is on service life tests, environmental simulations and long-term measurements.

Trends in industrial measurement and testing technology

  • The need for testing during development is increasing. The long-term stability of complex vehicle systems must be guaranteed even under harsh environmental conditions.
     
  • Test stands are able to process increasingly large amounts of data at even greater speeds. Data evaluation takes place during testing with remote access to results.
     
  • Testing technology is becoming faster and performed at higher resolutions with unlimited recording of measurement series and test results being traceable at all times.

Large data volumes, more flexible and powerful analyses

  • Increasingly complex test scenarios. Vehicles are becoming increasingly complex thereby requiring a more flexible and efficient test environment. Measuring, control and monitoring tasks as well as evaluation functions are integrated into a single system and also performed without the need for PC support. Test stand applications can also be individually adapted and testing procedures fully automated.
     
  • Increasing amounts of dataLifetime testing of components often generates very large amounts of data of one or more terabytes. These data volumes must be seamlessly recorded, analyzed and finally archived in an audit-proof manner. Measured values are securely stored and kept available with data stamps even in the event of power failures. Even in the event of a PC or hard disk failure, integrated backup mechanisms ensure data security, for example by storing data on NAS drives.

High-quality measurement and testing technology for automotive requirements

  • Example of environmental simulation in a climate chamber:A manufacturer's vehicle components are subjected to thermal and mechanical stress tests around the clock in long-term testing. Different temperatures, pressures, flow values, corrosion patterns and vibration stresses undergo simulation in a shaker using Delphin Message devices. ProfiSignal Klicks software enables the climate chamber and test samples to be monitored from the workplace.
     
  • Example of automation of the service-life testing: An automotive supplier tests the service life of fans under various environmental conditions. Individually created test profiles are used by a test device to automatically set variable speeds and the required controls are tested according to ambient temperatures. Control functions take place using analog, digital and PWM outputs.
     
  • Example of mobile and stand-alone data acquisition: Driving tests are used to test and evaluate components and systems under real conditions. The Loggito and Expert Logger devices are used as mobile and autonomous data loggers. Due to their ability to operate as stand-alone devices, their 12/24 volt power supplies and their interfaces, the devices are ideally suited for these tasks. Engine speed and other parameters are recorded via a CAN bus and the position, speed and distance travelled are recorded via a GPS sensor.
