Service life test for LED lights
The use of LEDs has led to a paradigm shift in lighting technology and the lighting industry. The long service life, the diverse designs of the light sources and completely new areas of application are challenging product development and therefore also measurement and testing technology.
During the development of LED luminaires, the most important requirements for the testing technology are the service life test and the heating test and safety tests in accordance with EN 60 598-1. Among other things, the tests ensure that a luminaire does not overheat and become a fire hazard even in the event of a fault.
Trends in industrial measurement and testing technology
- LED assemblies are not universally standardized. Very different shapes and special designs have to be tested. In addition, safety testing and service life testing of LED switching power supplies and LED modules require complete electrical isolation in the measurement technology as well as primary and secondary-side measurements of the AC and DC variables.
- New areas of application of LED technology lead to very different requirements for testing technology. The range of available test devices is growing significantly and extends from basic equipment with a temperature data logger to a luminaire test device with fully automated measurement and evaluation technology.
Automated checks with new functions
- New functions for luminaire testers. The testing technology is continuously kept up to date with hardware and software updates and regularly receives new functions. After a software update, test results can be automatically inserted into your own standardized reports based on Microsoft Word/Office.
- Full network functionality. TheTesting under defined temperature conditions in an air-conditioned environment is supported by spatially separated preparation and evaluation of the tests and their control via a network. Data can be retrieved from a central database and results stored there.
High-quality measurement and testing technology for luminaires
- Example of heating test according to EN 60 598-1: The measurement and evaluation technology of the Luminaire testers runs through all the test steps specified in the standard fully automatically. These include the cold measurement of winding resistances, the burn-in phase and the subsequent testing of electrical parameters. The test system automatically recognizes when the test specimen has reached a "steady state". The temperatures are then automatically standardized and converted to 25 degrees. In addition to normal operation, the test also includes reduced and increased nominal voltages. The test program also includes tests in abnormal operation, for example if the ballast is defective. The individual test steps are carried out automatically and a test report is created.
- Example service life test: The service life of a light source depends on a variety of factors, such as the luminaire design or the conditions during operation. With LEDs, the comprehensive measurement of heat development is particularly important for service life testing, as the increased luminance and power density in a small space leads to greater heating. As the thermocouples can also be attached to live components, allMeasuring channels are electrically isolated to protect the measurement technology. During automated testing, the AC and DC variables are also measured on the primary and secondary sides.
