FAQ
Vibration measurement is an essential method for monitoring the condition of machines and systems. It records different types of vibrations, such as mechanical vibrations caused by imbalances or bearing damage, structural vibrations of housings and foundations, and shaft vibrations in motors or turbines. Each of these types of vibrations provides valuable information about the condition of a machine and enables problems to be detected at an early stage.
Various sensors are used to record these vibrations. Acceleration sensors, which measure vibrations directly, are particularly common, as are speed sensors for low-frequency movements and displacement sensors for high-precision measurement of position changes. The correct selection and placement of sensors are crucial for obtaining meaningful data. In addition, pressure or temperature sensors can be integrated, for example, to obtain a more complete picture of the machine conditions and to combine different diagnostic procedures.
Measurements are taken using modular, high-performance devices such as the Expert Vibro. This device enables high sampling rates for detailed vibration analyses and offers multi-channel acquisition to monitor several measurement points simultaneously. It is capable of performing calculations such as FFT, order analysis, or envelope analysis in real time. Thanks to modular expandability and synchronized interfaces, vibration data can be combined with process variables such as temperature, current, voltage, or pressure. The integrated data storage supports both continuous long-term monitoring and the analysis of short-term, fast events.
The importance of vibration measurement lies primarily in early fault detection. Imbalances, resonances, or incipient bearing damage can be detected before they lead to major failures. This allows maintenance measures to be planned in a targeted manner, unplanned downtime to be avoided, and operational safety to be increased.
The interpretation of measurement data is crucial for deriving reliable conclusions about the condition of the machine from the raw signals. Amplitude changes, shock events, and trends can be identified in the time domain. Analysis in the frequency domain (FFT) enables the identification of specific fault frequencies and thus targeted assignment to specific components. For variable-speed machines, order analysis is also used to normalize frequencies to the respective speed. Envelope analysis is a key tool for detecting bearing damage, as it reveals high-frequency impulses. Long-term trend analyses help to track the development of potential damage and set limit values for automatic alarms. This creates a comprehensive diagnostic system that provides sound support for maintenance decisions.
Typical sources of error include incorrectly mounted or poorly positioned sensors, interference from the environment, and poorly adjusted measurement parameters such as sampling rate or filters. These problems can be avoided by correctly mounting sensors, selecting suitable measurement points, ensuring clean signal conditioning, and using high-quality, calibrated measuring devices.
Vibration measurement is particularly valuable in the context of preventive maintenance. It enables condition-based maintenance, in which machines are serviced according to actual need rather than at fixed intervals. This reduces costs and extends the service life of equipment. Systems from Delphin Technology are specially designed to support such applications and are used successfully in industries such as mechanical engineering, energy technology, and chemicals.
