Vibration analysis for turbines and generators

Vibration analysis is an important tool for monitoring and diagnosing turbines and generators. Turbines and generators operate under high loads and are susceptible to vibrations that can cause serious damage if not detected early. It is therefore important to carry out regular vibration measurements to detect irregularities and deviations from normal vibration patterns. Vibration analysis makes it possible to identify possible causes of vibrations, such as imbalance, misalignment, bearing damage or resonance. By detecting changes in the vibration patterns at an early stage, countermeasures can be taken, such as readjustment or replacement of components, to prevent major damage or even failure of the turbine or generator. Vibration analysis is therefore an indispensable tool for ensuring the reliable and efficient operation of turbines and generators.

Vibrations on turbines and generators, regardless of power class and bearing type, are monitored for impermissible vibration values. Typically, the vibration velocity is monitored. With the Expert Vibro device velocity sensors can be used directly with vibration velocity devices. The sensor signal, which is proportional to the vibration velocity, is measured and converted into an effective value. If vibration acceleration sensors are used, the signal is integrated online and converted into the vibration velocity. The TRMS or peak-peak value is then formed and permanently monitored by limit value channels. If limit values are exceeded, digital outputs are switched or messages are transmitted to control systems via fieldbus.

Practical example of turbine and generator monitoring

Cost-effective vibration monitoring of gas turbines

In the case of a retrofit or modernization, small to medium-sized gas turbines often receive a new vibration monitoring system. Delphin provides flexible monitoring systems in applications outside the scope of API670. The cost of a Delphin system is far below that of larger systems and is therefore very popular. In addition to the typical measurement of vibration velocity, temperatures are often recorded and considered in conjunction with the vibrations. In this specific application, small and medium-sized gas turbines are monitored. The connection to the higher-level control system is made via ModBus TCP. The limit value formation is very flexible and the individual alarms are combined into collective alarms.
