A sequence of event recorder is an electronic device that is used in industrial plants to record important events or faults within the process. It records the chronological sequence of events such as alarms, status changes or faults. A sequence of event recorder usually works closely with a SCADA system (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition). The SCADA system monitors and controls the entire system and receives the recordings from the sequence of event recorder. This connection makes it possible to monitor events in real time and react immediately to any problems that arise. In addition, the recorded data can be analyzed later in order to identify possible causes of errors or faults and initiate improvement measures. The combination of Sequence of Event recorders with SCADA systems therefore enables more efficient and reliable monitoring and control of industrial processes.

To analyze switching processes, switching times and sequences, it is important to record digital signals with high temporal resolution. A data logger must be significantly faster than typical PLC cycle times, especially when analyzing faults. For example, an event recorder must also be able to reliably resolve the bouncing of relays and contacts. The ProfiMessage and Expert devices are the ideal tool for this. The digital inputs record events with a resolution of a few µsec. All inputs are recorded in parallel so that the switching times can be precisely determined and calculated. Depending on the task, analog variables can also be recorded in parallel. Events with pre- and post-history can be recorded and saved via internal logic channels and trigger channels.

Detection of faults and switching times for locomotives

A manufacturer of locomotives relies on ProfiMessage devices to record faults and switching times during travel. Digital signals are recorded at control units, relays and contactors. CAN data is also recorded, as several CAN buses are used on the locomotive. The position data is also recorded synchronously via a GPS sensor.
