CAT 5 (Category 5) refers to a standardized network cable with twisted-pair conductors (twisted pair) that complies with the standard EIA/TIA-568 was developed for the transmission of digital data. Twisting the conductors in pairs reduces electromagnetic interference and ensures reliable signal transmission.

CAT-5 cables are used in Ethernet networks as well as in numerous applications in measurement, testing, and automation technology. They facilitate communication between measuring instruments, data acquisition systems, controllers, industrial PCs, and other network components. Thanks to their robust transmission characteristics, they are suitable for both office and industrial environments.

In measurement technology, CAT-5 cables are frequently used to network distributed measurement data acquisition systems. Ethernet-based communication protocols enable measurement data to be reliably transmitted, stored, and evaluated in real time. The twisted-pair conductors help minimize interference from adjacent cables, electrical equipment, or electromagnetic fields.

However, the actual transmission quality and cable length achievable depend on various factors. In addition to cable quality, external conditions such as electromagnetic interference, the method of installation, temperature conditions, connectors, and the network technology used all affect the connection’s performance. In industrial environments in particular, these factors can reduce the maximum transmission distance.

Therefore, in demanding measurement and automation applications, the actual transmission conditions should be taken into account and, if necessary, verified through appropriate measurements. This is the only way to ensure that the required data rate and communication security are maintained over the long term.

CAT-5 cables remain a proven foundation for data communication in many measurement and automation systems to this day and enable cost-effective networking of devices and systems.
