CIFS

CIFS (Common Internet File System) is a network protocol that enables access to a server's files and directories via a network connection. It is based on the SMB (Server Message Block) protocol and is primarily used in Windows-based networks for sharing files, folders, and other resources.

In order for a client to access data, the corresponding files or folders must be made available on the server as network shares. Through these shares, authorized users and applications can read, save, modify, or manage files as if they were located on a local drive.

In measurement, testing, and automation technology, CIFS is frequently used for the central storage and provision of measurement data. Measuring instruments, data loggers, industrial PCs, and measurement data acquisition systems can automatically save recorded data to network drives and make it available to other systems. This simplifies the centralized archiving, further processing, and backup of measurement data.

A typical example of this application is the automatic transfer of measurement files to a server, where they are made available to analysis software, databases, or higher-level control systems. This allows measurement data to be used across multiple locations and integrated into existing IT infrastructures.

The performance of a CIFS connection depends on various factors, including network speed, server performance, access rights, and the number of concurrent users or applications. For industrial applications, a reliable network infrastructure is also required to ensure secure and uninterrupted data transmission.

CIFS is therefore a proven protocol for network-based file access and plays an important role in the centralized storage, management, and delivery of measurement and process data in modern measurement and automation systems.
