ESD | Electrostatic Discharge

ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) refers to the sudden discharge of electrostatic charges between two objects with different electrical potentials. This results in a voltage breakdown within a very short time, causing a very brief but often high current flow.

In everyday life, ESD occurs, for example, when a person touches a doorknob after walking across a carpet and feels a small electric shock. The voltages involved can reach several thousand volts, although the energy transferred is usually minimal.

However, electrostatic discharges pose a significant risk to electronic components and measuring instruments. Even if a discharge is imperceptible to humans, it can damage sensitive electronic components or shorten their service life. In some cases, damage does not occur immediately but leads to malfunctions or failures only later on.

Modern measurement, control, and data acquisition systems are particularly at risk, as they contain highly integrated electronic circuits with very small structures. If electrostatic charges are transferred to a device—for example, by touching terminals, connectors, or printed circuit boards—electronic components can be permanently damaged.
