The External Bus is a specialized communication interface within the Delphin Message Series and is used to connect expansion devices to Delphin base units. This interface allows additional measurement and input/output modules to be easily integrated into an existing data acquisition system.
Technically, the External Bus is based on the proven CAN Bus Technology (Controller Area Network). For communication, Delphin uses its own Delphin CAN Protocol (DCP), which was specifically designed for reliable data transmission between Delphin devices.
For example, the external bus can be used to ProfiMessage Slave Devices with Delphin base units such as ProfiMessage D connect. This allows a measurement system to be flexibly expanded when additional measurement channels, inputs, or outputs are needed.
A particular advantage is that multiple expansion units can be operated in series within a bus structure. This so-called series connection enables the modular expansion of a system without the need for extensive rewiring or additional communication interfaces.
To ensure trouble-free data transmission, the bus must be properly terminated. To do this, a Terminating resistor with 120 ohms installed. This prevents signal reflections on the line and ensures reliable communication between all connected devices.
