ICP | Piezoelectric Integrated Circuit

ICP refers to a widely used method of coating and signal transmission for piezoelectric sensors. It is used in particular in accelerometers, vibration sensors, microphones, and other dynamic transducers.

Piezoelectric sensors generate electrical charges when subjected to mechanical stress. To ensure that these signals can be reliably detected and transmitted, many sensors feature integrated electronics. These are powered by a constant-current source, which also enables signal transmission.

What makes the ICP technique unique is that The supply voltage and the measurement signal are transmitted over the same line. This significantly reduces the amount of wiring required and simplifies installation.

The sensor signal is modulated onto a direct current or direct voltage and can then be evaluated by the measurement system. Special ICP inputs in measuring instruments provide the necessary constant current supply and isolate the useful signal from the supply component.

A key advantage of ICP sensors is their low output impedance. This allows for the use of longer cable runs without significantly compromising signal quality. In many applications, cable lengths of several hundred meters are easily achievable.
