IEPE | Standard for piezoelectric sensors

IEPE refers to a widely used industry standard for piezoelectric sensors. These sensors are used in particular in vibration, acceleration, and acoustic measurement technology and are characterized by their high sensitivity and robust signal transmission.

The measurement is based on the piezoelectric effect. Certain materials generate an electrical charge or voltage when subjected to mechanical stress. This allows for the precise measurement of dynamic quantities such as acceleration, vibrations, impacts, forces, or sound waves.

A key feature of IEPE sensors is their integrated electronics. Inside the sensor is a Impedance Converter, which converts the sensor signal—which originally has high impedance—into a low-impedance output signal. This makes the signal transmission significantly more robust against interference and line losses.

The low output impedance allows for the use of long connection cables without significantly compromising measurement quality. This is particularly advantageous in industrial applications where there are greater distances between the sensor and the measuring device.

How IEPE Sensors Work

An IEPE sensor essentially consists of:

  • A piezoelectric sensing element
  • Integrated electronics for signal processing
  • An impedance converter for matching the output signal

The electronics are powered by a constant-current power supply. The power supply and the measurement signal are transmitted over the same line. This method corresponds to the ICP technology commonly used in practice.
