The Master-Slave Principle is a communication protocol used in industrial bus systems and automation networks. In this system, a Master device all communication, while the connected Slave devices respond only to requests from the Master.

Since all participants share a common transmission channel, only one device at a time may send data. The master organizes the data traffic, assigns fixed communication times to the slaves, and thus ensures an orderly and collision-free exchange of data.

How a Master-Slave System Works

In a master-slave bus system, only the master initiates communication. It polls the connected slave devices one after another and receives their responses. The slaves never send data on their own, but only when requested.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Master-Slave Principle

The master-slave method has proven itself in many industrial applications due to its simple structure.

Advantages:

Disadvantages:

  • Communication occurs sequentially and may slow down when there are many participants.
  • If the master fails, communication throughout the entire system comes to a standstill.
  • Slave devices cannot transmit data on their own.
