PROFIBUS

PROFIBUS (Process Field Bus) is a globally established fieldbus standard for industrial automation technology. The communication system was specifically developed for the reliable networking of sensors, actuators, measuring devices, controllers, and control systems, and enables the rapid exchange of process and diagnostic data in industrial applications.

Communication takes place according to the Master-Slave Principle. In this setup, a master system—such as a PLC or a process control system—manages the data transmission and communicates with the connected field devices (slaves). This allows measured values, status information, and control commands to be exchanged efficiently and reliably.

PROFIBUS It has become the standard, particularly in the manufacturing and process industries. Thanks to its high transmission reliability and flexibility, the protocol is used in numerous applications—ranging from machine and plant automation to test benches and energy and process engineering.

In industrial measurement technology, PROFIBUS enables the seamless integration of measurement data acquisition systems into existing automation environments. Through standardized interfaces, measurement data can be acquired and transmitted in real time and used directly for monitoring, control, or analysis tasks. This significantly simplifies the integration of measurement systems and reduces the effort required for integration.

The measurement data acquisition devices and software solutions from Delphin Technology support the PROFIBUS-DP Protocol for communication via COM/RS485 interfaces. This allows Delphin systems to be flexibly integrated into existing automation and control systems and used for the central collection, analysis, and archiving of measurement data.

PROFIBUS includes various versions for different applications:

  • PROFIBUS DP (Decentralized Peripherals): For fast communication between controllers, sensors, and actuators. Particularly common in mechanical engineering, manufacturing facilities, and test benches.
  • PROFIBUS PA (Process Automation): Designed for the process industry and for communication with field devices such as pressure, temperature, or flow meters.
  • PROFIBUS FMS (Fieldbus Message Specification): For more complex communication tasks between intelligent automation systems and plant components.
