Serial interface

Serial interface

One serial port is a communication interface for transmitting data between computers, measuring instruments, sensors, control systems, and other electronic systems. In serial data transmission, information is transmitted bit by bit in sequence over one or more lines.

Serial interfaces have become widely used worldwide due to their minimal wiring requirements, high reliability, and versatility in industrial, automation, and measurement applications.

In the past, serial interfaces were primarily used to connect computers to peripheral devices such as mice, printers, or modems. The best-known standard was the RS-232 interface (CCITT V.24), which is still used in many industrial applications today.

Modern communication standards are also based on serial data transmission. These include, among others:

  • RS-232
  • RS-485
  • USB
  • Ethernet
  • CAN-Bus
  • FireWire (IEEE 1394)
  • SATA
  • Modbus RTU
  • PROFIBUS
  • PROFINET

In all of these technologies, data is transmitted serially in a defined order, even though the transmission protocols, speeds, and physical transmission media differ.

How a Serial Interface Works

In serial communication, data is transmitted as individual bits over a communication channel. The sender and receiver must use the same transmission parameters. These include, for example:

  • Baud rate
  • Data bits
  • Stop Bits
  • Checksum
  • Communication Protocol

This standardized communication allows different devices to reliably exchange data, transmit measurement values, or execute control commands.

Serial Interfaces in Measurement Technology

In modern measurement and testing technology, serial interfaces are used to connect:

  • Sensors
  • data loggers
  • Measurement Data Acquisition Systems
  • Test benches
  • PLCs
  • Analysis and Evaluation Software
  • Field devices and remote I/O systems

In distributed measurement systems in particular, serial interfaces enable the reliable transmission of large amounts of measurement data over long distances.

The measurement data acquisition solutions from Delphin Technology support a wide range of industrial communication interfaces and protocols. Through interfaces such as Ethernet, USB, Modbus, OPC UA, PROFIBUS or PROFINET Measurement data, process values, and status information can be seamlessly exchanged between sensors, measuring instruments, automation systems, and software platforms. This enables measurement data to be centrally collected, visualized, analyzed, and integrated into existing production and testing environments.

Advantages of Serial Interfaces

Serial interfaces offer numerous advantages for industrial and measurement applications:

  • Minimal wiring required
  • High transmission reliability
  • Long ranges depending on the type of interface
  • Easy Device Integration
  • Cost-Effective Communication
  • Good immunity to interference with industrial standards such as RS-485
  • Flexible integration into automation and measurement systems

As a result, they remain among the most important communication channels in measurement, testing, and automation technology to this day.

Significance for Industrial Digitalization

Serial and network-based interfaces play a central role in Industry 4.0 and the Industrial IoT. They enable the interconnection of machines, sensors, and IT systems and lay the foundation for:

  • Condition Monitoring
  • Process monitoring
  • Predictive Maintenance
  • Automated Test Benches
  • Cloud-Based Data Analysis
  • Centralized Measurement Data Collection

A high-performance communications infrastructure ensures that measurement data is available at all times and can be used to make informed decisions.
