What exactly is a SCADA system and how does it work?
Industrial digitalization offers immense benefits, particularly through the analysis of production data to uncover previously unrecognised optimization potential. In modern, digitally supported production lines, enormous amounts of data are generated every day that need to be transported, stored and processed. The SCADA software from Delphin is an intelligent, powerful and future-proof solution for efficiently managing, archiving and meaningfully processing data. What exactly is a SCADA system and how does it work? You can find out these and many other relevant basics about SCADA here.
What is a SCADA system?
SCADA stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition and refers to a control system for technical processes. SCADA specializes in the acquisition, analysis and visualization of data in industrial environments. It enables cross-site monitoring and control of complex processes and systems. SCADA systems also collect and record operating data, thus creating a basis for data-based business decisions.
Why was the SCADA system developed?
In a globally networked world, production lines and systems are often distributed decentrally across several locations. While machines and systems used to be monitored manually on site, the focus today is on monitoring over long distances. The introduction of microprocessors and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) laid the foundations for modern monitoring and control systems. Information technology eventually grew ever closer together with operational technology - and SCADA emerged as a system solution approach. Delphin has recognized this relevance. This enables comprehensive monitoring and control of technical processes.
How is a SCADA system structured
A SCADA system consists of hardware and software that interlock on several levels:
- At the lowest level, there are programmable logic controllers (PLCs) or I&C systems such as the Delphin Expert Loggerwhich communicate directly with the connected sensors or connected devices and serve as local collection points for the generated data. Monitoring and initial pre-processing of the measurement data can already take place here.
- The data is then forwarded to the next higher layer of the system - where the data must be networked, synchronized and stored. With the help of the Delphin Data Center (DDC) opens up the possibility of worldwide metrological networking and control of systems, machines and test benches.
- The last and therefore "top" layer in the SCADA system is special software solutions such as the ProfiSignal 20 measurement software for use. The SCADA software represents the front end of the entire system. Dashboards are used to display the collected data visually. Furthermore, measurement data, systems or machines can be controlled and regulated via the dashboard.
What are the areas of application for a SCADA system?
SCADA systems offer various application options. In addition to recording, monitoring and processing data, a SCADA system also offers the option of being able to control processes completely independently of location.
- Monitoring and control of pumped-storage power plants, power grids or traffic light circuits
- Predictive maintenance and servicing of machines
- Automation of test stands
- Intelligent building management
What are the advantages of a SCADA system
A SCADA system enables real-time monitoring of operational processes, regardless of location. SCADA systems concentrate data from various sources in one place, offer numerous possibilities for automating processes and, last but not least, provide a data-driven basis for business decisions. It offers:
- Visibility and control over all current processes
- Direct control of individual components in the overall system
- Immediate remote access to all relevant data
How does communication work within a SCADA system?
Modern SCADA systems are increasingly relying on TCP/IP-based communication protocols. However, serial connections, for example in the form of fieldbus systems, play a key role at field level. Important to know: There is currently no overarching standard for communication. Although OPC UA is currently widely used as a uniform communication standard, it is not possible to make a general statement about how devices will communicate with each other in the future. Delphin therefore relies on the widest possible selection of communication channels in the area of hardware and software. Whether OPC UA, PROFINET, Modbus TCP / RTU, RS485, RS232 or PROFIBUS: virtually all common communication interfaces are possible at field level. Data forwarding from the MSR systems to the server is implemented via LAN, WLAN or LTE.
SCADA solutions from Delphin: A very individual thing!
A SCADA system can be flexibly scaled to the needs of a company. From "small" solutions to comprehensive networks: nothing is impossible. With SCADA software and hardware from Delphin, processes can be individually adapted and optimized. The ProfiSignal 20 measurement technology software enables platform-independent visualization and analysis of data as well as simple control and monitoring of processes. The Delphin SCADA software enables perfect operation at all levels - from the hall overview down to each individual machine or system. Stationary computers or mobile devices can be used to check individual operating parameters or adjust them immediately if necessary. With suitable diagram types for a wide range of applications, a powerful measured value display and process visualizations without programming effort, ProfiSignal 20 is designed to combine state-of-the-art operating concepts with top technical performance.
However, any software only works as well as the hardware behind it. With Delphin solutions, you get high-precision approaches for your SCADA system from the ground up - always with maximum flexibility and precisely tailored to your company's needs. From the field level to the cloud.
With Delphin Technology to Industry 4.0
The introduction of a SCADA system can seem complex, but with the right partner, it is effortless. The first step is to determine which areas are to be monitored and which data needs to be collected now and in the future. Based on this, a concept for integrating data collection points, the required sensors and data loggers is developed. A decision is made as to whether the data should be centralized in the cloud or in the company's own data centre/server.
The Delphin SCADA software is then designed: It is determined which data is displayed on which dashboard, which automations and rules are part of the solution and how the visualization takes place.
Delphin Technology accompanies companies every step of the way to the Smart Factory, from the initial concept idea to full implementation. The modular structure of the hardware and software allows every last detail to be tailored precisely to your needs.
