PE | (English Protective Earth), Protective conductor. A distinction is made between two types of earthing in electrical installations: a) Protective earthing (PE = Protective Earth): Protection of persons, animals and property (devices) from electric shock due to overvoltage in the event of a fault. b) Functional earthing (FE = Functional Earth): Discharge of interference currents during regular operation to reduce distortion of the useful signal.
